2015 Franklin Expedition: Mission Erebus and Terror
During August and September 2015, DFO’s Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) and the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) participated in the 2015 Franklin Expedition in Canada’s Arctic. Following the 2014 discovery of the HMS Erebus, one of the ships from Sir John Franklin’s doomed 1845 expedition to find the Northwest Passage, staff participated in the continued search for artifacts and the final resting place for Franklin’s second ship, the HMS Terror.
Arctic nautical charting and marine safety are very much a part of the modern day Franklin missions, and a simple glance at the sunken Erebus reinforces the theme. As part of the overall mission, CHS led, with assistance and collaboration from the CCG, Parks Canada and the Royal Canadian Navy, a multibeam sonar survey that amassed over 8000 line kilometres of new bathymetric (water depth) data from the ocean floor in the HMS Terror search area. The new data and sea bed imagery will be examined for both modernizing Arctic nautical charts, and archeological searches on the sea bed.
While the second vessel remains undiscovered, the project was considered the area’s most productive multibeam survey mission to date, given the incredible amount of new information collected regarding the seabed and ideal sea ice and weather conditions.
DFO congratulates its employees and other partners on another successful mission.
Services and information
These Ship’s Logs and accompanying photos capture the day to day operations of Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) and Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) employees during the 2015 Franklin Expedition: Mission Erebus and Terror. The work and expertise of these employees played a pivotal role in charting the Arctic seabed and assisting in the search of Sir John Franklin’s remaining lost ship, HMS Terror.
